Sparks of sunlight winked and bobbed on the empty surface of the ocean. It rolled towards us in long, low hills, dissolving in a hazy fizz on our toes. The warm breeze swayed through our hair and our dark glasses reflected back the unquestioning blue stripes: sea and sky, dark and light, streaked with white ruffles of foam and cloud.
I sipped my champagne. My head was pleasantly fuzzy. The sand sieved through my toes and my dress fluttered against my calves. I gazed at the sea and the reflections of the sky. And then I saw, deep in the water, far out but somehow close enough to whisper, Charlotte’s face.
I didn’t question it: I just understood. I stepped forward. I was vaguely aware that the rest of the party was also moving. Eyes fixed on the horizon, we walked as one, ever deeper, into the tide.
