Listen: Even space moves.


She hits the water with a crack, the calm tension smashed and flung in shards over the surface. Pressure from beneath bends against the force of her impact, the surface momentarily rubberised, taking her shape, accepting everything, questioning nothing.

A split second.

Then the lake is there again and she is not.

The ripples start as a wave, saying SHE WAS HERE. SHE DID THIS. The water accepts the wave and soothes it. She is still here, it says. The ripples gently insist: she did this. She did this. The water does nothing. The ripples look further out for an answer. Just before they reach it, they are gone.

Further down, she turns. Bubbles of life slip from her lips. She can’t find the floor. She kicks anyway, and she rises. She wriggles up towards the light.

The water holds her, then lets her go.

A fresh little wave catches the ripples and calms them in the morning sun.
