about

Listen: there’s another one.

Up close, you can see a stick jammed into a thumb-sized hole in the wall. Step back a few paces and there’s another, and another. You keep retreating. You feel uneasy.

There are dozens of them... hundreds. You realise they’re all connected by little fissures and cracks, cold black veins on the grey, dusty skin. Some of them are weeping gently; tiny rivulets edge downwards, gratefully meeting the next glistening scar below, twinkling in the hard January sun.

You’re moving further away, and upwards. The wall seems to go up and along forever... but you can see now. You can see what it is as you rise, higher and higher. The sticks are just dots now, but the odd spark of sunlight winks at you from the surface. And at the top, behind the wall, the great blue lake shimmers and glistens, silently bearing down, endless beneath the rippling sheen, holding its unimaginable tension inside, hanging, inevitable, vast. Waiting.

You’re growing fast now. You see the river beyond, its winding path through the mountains, and, beyond the land, the slowly churning ocean that feeds it. You want to run now, but you can’t. You’re too big. You can’t move away. Far below, you can still see the dam. You even hear the faint tearing and see the glint as another small crack appears.

And then you notice a tiny figure, a moving speck of dust scurrying across the surface. He uses the sticks jutting out of the wall as footholds, sweating, panting, scrambling up to the new hole. He takes another stick from inside his shirt, scraping his skin as he frantically jams it in, plugging the leak. He pauses for breath, leaning his head against the cold, dirty surface.

And now you are close. Right next to him on the wall. You can see his breath curling away. The lines on his face.

Another faint snap... another crack. On the far side of the dam now. You both look up sharply, hearts thumping.

You reach inside your shirt. There are just a few sticks left now.
