about

Listen: it’s no good pretending you don’t know.

Sheila stood at the top of the stairs, the letter in her hand. Her mind had burst; she could only perceive a bright blank whiteness that was ... what? Fear? Anger? No... it was lighter than that. It was... joy!

The light zoomed into a tiny pinpoint and barrelled deep down inside her. In its place came the day, and a sound that Sheila suddenly realised was an ecstatic scream coming from her own lungs. Reality snapped into place and she found herself sliding down the bannisters, giggling like a 12-year-old. She grabbed her jacket and sailed out into the crisp January air.

At the government office she waited impatiently while a middle aged woman became increasingly agitated at the clerk’s window. When the woman eventually shrank away, sobbing and defeated, Sheila stepped brightly up to the little glass frame.

“Hello! I’ve come to collect something. I’ve got a letter,” she gushed, her happiness shining down on the grey clerk hunched behind the thick, smeared pane. He took the letter, glanced up at her and turned wordlessly away. He bent to a low drawer or cupboard behind him and remained that way, apparently motionless, for about a minute.

“Are you okay?” cooed Sheila. The man turned slowly back. He didn’t raise his face as he slid something towards her beneath the glass.

Sheila looked down. This wasn’t what she came for. Ice shot through her as she turned over the small grey envelope, fingers suddenly shaking. Her giddiness plunged into nausea.

The man leaned in to the glass, fixing her with his grey eyes, drawing her in so she could hear him speak in a low voice, cold and dark. He said what she already knew.

“I know your secrets.”
