The boy looked up, lips pursed, eyes studying the gloom. Hazy shapes quivered through the murk, flashes of luminescence drifting and bobbing in and out of visible range. A human arm flitted into view and was gone. The top of a head, long hair floating behind it. And the boy began to be aware of a sound – a semi rhythmic pattering interspersed with sharp, animalistic breaths… they were panting. Two passed closer and he saw a man and a woman, sheened with perspiration, desperate eyes staring into the blank distance as they loped gracelessly by.
They were harmless. The boy returned to his work, hands skilfully working the machine almost instinctively now. He forgot the runners and lost himself thankfully in the simple cycles of his task.
He didn’t know that the luminescent shapes would gather at the end of the trail. They would huddle, sharing heat.
And they would plan what they were going to do with him.
